Hello, I’m Sophia.  Welcome to my blog, Love and Lentils.  This is my online home where I share what’s cooking in my home for my family.

I started Love and Lentils in March 2013 after having been a vegetarian for three years.  At that time, I really did not think anyone besides my friends and family would read my blog, so in the beginning it was more of a personal, food-oriented place where I kept my favourite recipes online.  My friends loved the recipes and encouraged me to keep creating.  Shortly after, I connected with an amazing community of food bloggers and people genuinely interested in living a healthier lifestyle.  That’s when I really wanted to spread a message to my readers that even as a working mom – healthy, plant-based meals do not have to be difficult or time-consuming and can taste so delicious.  So, I worked on improving my food photography, recipe creations, and the overall look of my website.

I became a vegetarian on Thanksgiving weekend in 2010.  It was not a decision made overnight, rather I started reading about factory farming and watched many documentaries, and was quickly exposed to the reality of where our food came from.  The moment I finished reading the book Skinny Bitch, I gave up meat and fish for good. I also try to swap dairy for other ingredients whenever possible, and you will notice this on my website, almost all recipes are vegan.

I have a condition, PCOS, and I avoid certain foods in order to manage my symptoms and the longterm complications of my condition. Women with PCOS often have higher levels of insulin in their blood, which can result in difficulty managing a healthy weight, conceiving, and ultimately, can lead to diabetes or heart disease.  Although I didn’t know about my condition when I transitioned to a vegetarian diet, it was the main reason I began avoiding dairy, bad fats, and high GI foods whenever possible, rather focusing on nourishing foods that are nutrient-dense.  My diet consists of an abundance of amazingly delicious food! I never, ever feel deprived.

Adopting a vegetarian lifestyle inspired me to begin Love and Lentils.  I realized my love for cooking, which was non-existent before I became vegetarian and my family’s meals are so, SO much better!

I only cook vegetarian/vegan meals for my family (although they do consume animal products), and that is why I choose to write only about those.  Vegetarian and vegan food is much more inclusive than non-veg food.  I can always make a plant-based meal for my family or people who are not vegetarian or vegan and they can decide it’s delicious, but it doesn’t work the other way around.  That’s why in my home, the majority of our meals are vegetarian or vegan.  I know I feel so much better eating plant-based meals, and my family also benefits.

about page photos

I value simplicity.  My favourite recipes on Love and Lentils are the simple ones that include basic ingredients which you most likely have in your pantry.  As a working mom, I don’t have hours to prepare meals.  In order to keep them healthy, I always keep about 5 of my favourite recipes’ ingredients on hand and encourage you to do the same! They’re always great to turn to when you’re at a loss for what to cook.

My hope through this blog is to inspire you to try something healthy and plant-based for your family’s dinner.  You will discover that healthy, delicious, simple, and plant-based can in fact be synonymous with one another!

Thank you for taking the time for some Love and Lentils, I am truly grateful you are here.  You can also find me on FacebookTwitterInstagram, and Pinterest and join my mailing list to get updates right in your email inbox.
